Maya couldn’t help but laugh; I’m not lying.“That’s not a good way to start, you know.” She watched carefully as the other girl spoke, trying to figure out whether or not she was lying. She was fairly alright at reading people, and she hoped now she wasn’t being blindsided. Arlene had been her friend, but then again — The other girl was also a Greaser, and Maya knew all too well what they were capable of.  Maya looked down at her lap, unsure of what Arlene was hoping to get out of this. “So that’s it? You just wanted to tell me you were seeing a therapist?” she said, her voice sharper than intended.

Arlene fought the urge to say something remotely bitchy when Maya made her comment. She could hear Mrs. Staniszewski in the background. Try to avoid confrontation at all costs. That’s the first step. Arlene took a deep breath and kept on with her monologue, which seemed to be coming to her as she went. This probably was not a good idea, because now she was worried she was gonna say something asshole-ish unconsciously. “ – I went to therapist and they did one of those evaluations, the kind to see if you have any problems, or something like that.” Arlene said, taking a deep breath. “The doctor explained to me that the problem might of been something more serious than I thought.”
